Nationwide teen driving fatalities increases in first half of 2012

GasBuddy Blog -- A report released by the Governors Highway Safety Association (GHSA) reveals that the number of 16- and 17-year-old driver deaths in passenger vehicles increased dramatically for the first six months of 2012, based on preliminary data supplied by all 50 states and the District of Columbia. Overall, 16- and 17-year-old driver deaths increased from 202 to 240 – a 19 percent jump.

The increase in teen driver deaths coincides with a projection from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) in which all traffic deaths increased by 8 percent. It is particularly concerning that 16- and 17-year-old driver deaths appear to have increased at an even greater rate.

Sixteen was set originally for farm kids to drive on the roads as they had been driving tractors in the fields for a few yrs. before they were 16 and had the maturity which came from being responsible for many other chores . Kids today as a rule have less responsibility. Raise the age to 18 and make them pay for their own drivers training classes.

Looking back on my own driving behavior at that age, it's a miracle I didn't kill myself or anyone else. I'd say most of my friends were the same way. Someone was definitely watching out for me.

Novice drivers need seat time with a driving school like this one. Tire Rack Street Survivor School If I had a young, novice driver that I loved and wanted to be safe on public roads I would find a way to get them to this school. There are not that many school events so if you are interested you better get planning. I've read that the kids really like this training and respond to the knowledge with safe driving behavior.

New drivers are given a series of licences with limits on driving with/without an adult on board, day/night hours for driving, city/highway driving limits, etc. leading to a full adult licence. It works well.
